Many of you already know the cat, Cosmo, who lived outside at Rick and Shelley’s house. He had been Tricia and Ryan’s cat, then when their landlord said they couldn’t keep him anymore he came to live with Rick and Shelley, but since several members of the family are allergic to cats he had to stay outside. He became a sort of neighborhood mascot, and moonlighted at several other people’s houses; everybody knew Cosmo. When we moved out the plan was for us to take Cosmo with us so he could have a more permanent indoors situation. But the house we’re in has a fairly significant pet deposit and we hadn’t been able to pay it yet. So Tuesday Shelley called and said that Cosmo had been injured somehow (we found out later at the vets that it was a bite from another cat) and so couldn’t stay outside anymore. He was in their garage just then, but it would be too hot in there soon, and they were going out of town. She offered to pay the pet deposit for us (THANK YOU!!!!!) and brought Cosmo up to us. So long story short (too late) we have a kitty now! Hooray! Cosmo is settling in nicely. He’s picked Isaac’s bed as his preferred place to sleep at night, and follows us to whatever room we’re in during the day. We’ve restarted his clicker training (Ryan and Tricia had done some), and have plans to teach him to go potty on the people toilet for a litter box-free existence. Last night we all watched a movie together and he sat in our laps the whole time. It’s a wonderful feeling to have a furry friend around the house again.
Yesterday we spent most of the day at Antelope Island, a large island in the Great Salt Lake. We went to the Fielding Garr Ranch, which was started on the island in the 1840s. They were having some fun activities for the Memorial Day weekend, so the kids got to make candles, try out some old fashioned tools and try a lasso. We toured the old buildings and had a picnic lunch. There were even baby great horned owls in one of the Cottonwood trees behind the buildings. After the picnic we drove back over to the other side of the island and paid a visit to the Sea Monkeys (aka brine shrimp). The plan was to just wade with our feet as I forgot to bring towels, but Gwen-fishy-mermaid-girl decided to lay down and swim anyway, which was fine.
Other than the owls we saw about 5 antelope, a herd of about 50 bison far away and one by it’s lonesome up close, a race runner lizard, large cranes, some chuckars (quail looking birds) various other kinds of water loving birds, a jackrabbit and either a fox or coyote (it was too far away to tell.)
Rus had a fun opportunity this week. The Discovery Gateway people called him and said they needed him to help them with the experiments, so he got to go play Mr. Wizard again, which he enjoyed.

Love the kitty! Mine is rather neurotic, but he is nice to have around.
I am planning to buy tickets- unfortunately something urgent has come up. One of my best friends ever has died and I'm scraping together the cash to go visit his sister and others so we can comfort each other. But I will keep you posted- I do plan to be there.
